A short distance
from Pennies Palace
|
At the entrance
to the valley are Dunedin's Botanical Gardens, featuring the world's
finest display of rhododendrons (September to November) herb gardens, an
impressive glasshouse, an aviary, rose gardens, duck pond, playground,
a stunning rockery and acres of area with fine bush walks.
|
As you progress
along the valley there's the world's steepest street (Baldwin Street) with
a restored 'post office' on the North Road, offering souvenirs and a local
potter has a business on Baldwin Street.
|
Chingford Park.
This public park
offers easy bush walks, a quiet space to meditate, a stream to picnic by,
and local children playing childhood games, in a magical playground that
will leave you with a sense of rejuvenation.
|
Another short
walk away is the bigger children's playground in the form of ' the local
' tavern. Pool tables, live T.V. sports coverage of major international
events, poker machines, a real ' kiwi ' restaurant and bar with beer and
wine ' to go'.
|
At the far end
of the valley is Bethune's Gully; another bush reserve, which is at the
base of Mount Cargill. If you're a hiker there's a beautiful up-hill bush
walk to the summit which takes an hour or two depending on speed. The view
from the top can only be described as breath-taking. This is also accessible
by car.
